I’m a very resourceful person. So much to the point where friends often come to me for information, advice, directions, guidance and whatnot. The problem with this is that when someone looks to me for information, often times they don’t even bother to do their own research first.

I got to the point in my life where I was spending so much time helping people and it turned out to be a complete waste of my time. Whether it was trying to find someone a job, forwarding emails to people or giving out information to someone who was perfectly capable of finding it on their own.

Needless to say, I got tired. I got tired because the friends that I tried to “help” wouldn’t take the time to even help themselves.  I read a famous quote by Andrew Carnegie that pretty much summed it all up:  “You can’t push anyone up the ladder unless he is ready to climb himself.”

I’ve decided that the time and energy I spent on someone else could be better spent on myself. Instead of being a cheerleader for others I am now my own cheerleader. Go me!

Always,

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Nelson Mandela joined hundreds of mourners Thursday at the funeral of the former South African president’s great-granddaughter who was killed in car crash last week.

The death of 13-year-old Zenani Mandela forced Mandela to cancel plans to attend the opening game of the Soccer World Cup last Friday, dampening the mood at the start of global sports spectacle.

Dressed in a black coat, Mandela, 91, arrived as the funeral was under way and walked slowly and with assistance to a front row seat accompanied by his wife Graca Machel.

Schoolfriends and family of Zenani entered a Johannesburg Methodist chapel, carrying flower baskets before condolences messages were read out that described her as a “natural born star” who loved music.

Zenani, killed two days after her 13th birthday, was one of Mandela’s nine great-grandchildren. She died when the car she was traveling in after the official World Cup Kick-Off concert was involved in an accident.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell said in a video message that she considered Zenani a goddaughter and remembered playing with the child.

“I was truly blessed to have been able to say that we walked and laughed and got to play dress-up,” she said. “She will remain in my heart forever.”

Zenani was buried Thursday morning.

Singer and actress Lena Horne has died at the age of 92. Horne rose to prominence in the 1940s as the first black woman performer to appear on-screen as a glamorous leading lady, as opposed to a matronly nanny or maid, the roles commonly assigned to black actresses at that time. The musical films “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather” sealed Horne’s status as an iconic black performer. She went on to battle offensive depictions of black women in the performing arts throughout her career, and she died Sunday after six decades on stage.

Johannesburg will be awash with style, elegance and beauty for four days in June and July when the world’s leading African Fashion designers from across the continent and Diaspora gather to showcase the finest contemporary African design at the second annual Africa Fashion Week.

The exquisite collections of 33 designers will feature in 19 runway shows from June 30 to July 3.

“Africa Fashion Week (AFW) is potentially the most important platform for the African fashion industry, being perfectly positioned to promote African designers globally,” said African Fashion International (AFI) chairperson Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.

It is rare, in fact completely unique, to have all the leading voices in African Fashion in one place, at one time, in one country.

Those voices will give expression to Africa’s fashion future at a two-day seminar that runs alongside the runway shows; and that will examine ways of strengthening the burgeoning African Fashion industry, debating an African aesthetic and building a global network.
